Data, privacy & devices

Where is my data stored?

Everything stays in your browser's local storage — on your device, never on a server. Nothing is transmitted anywhere. You can read more about how this works in our local-first explainer.

What does 'your data never leaves your device' actually mean?

It means there is no server, no cloud sync, and no account. The app runs entirely in your browser using the browser's built-in local storage API. We've written a detailed plain-English explanation here if you want the full picture.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There are no accounts, no email addresses, no passwords. You open the app and start tracking. We've written about why health tracking apps shouldn't need your email if you're curious about our thinking.

Is my data backed up automatically?

No — and that's intentional. Because nothing leaves your device, there is no automatic cloud backup. You should export a backup JSON file regularly using the Export button in the app. Keep it somewhere safe (a folder on your computer, an encrypted drive, etc.).

I switched devices and my data is gone.

Local storage is isolated to the browser and device it was created on. To move your data, export a backup JSON from your old device, then use Import on your new device. If you didn't export a backup, the data cannot be recovered.

Does Fieldnote work offline?

Yes. Once the app has loaded, it works entirely offline. There are no network requests during use.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

Clearing browser data (cookies, site data, or local storage) will delete your tracking data. If you use private/incognito mode, data is also deleted when the window closes. Export a backup before clearing anything.

Can I use the same app on multiple devices?

Yes, but data is not synced between them. Export a backup from one device and import it on the other to get in sync. After that, you'll need to keep both up to date manually or pick one as your primary device.

Do you sell my data?

No. We don't receive your data in the first place — it never leaves your device. You can read about how health data brokers work and why this matters in this article.

What analytics do you collect on fieldnote.health?

The marketing website uses Umami for privacy-friendly analytics (page view counts, no personal data). You're asked for consent on your first visit. The apps themselves collect nothing. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

FODMAP Tracker

Using the FODMAP Tracker

What is FODMAP and who is this tracker for?

FODMAP stands for a group of fermentable carbohydrates that trigger gut symptoms in some people. The tracker is for people following the low-FODMAP elimination and reintroduction protocol, usually under dietitian guidance. Read our plain-English FODMAP guide →

What should I log?

Every meal, ingredient, and symptom — along with timing, quantities, and stress or sleep if relevant. Patterns only emerge from consistent data. Our tracking guide explains what to capture and why →

Why do calories look off?

Calorie and macro calculations use standard nutritional densities. Adjust quantities to match your actual serving size for more accurate figures.

How do I share my data with my dietitian or clinician?

Use the History & Insights view during your appointment, or export a backup JSON and share the file. The export includes your full log in a readable format.

Is this a substitute for working with a dietitian?

No. The FODMAP elimination diet should ideally be done with a registered dietitian, especially the reintroduction phase. The tracker helps you capture data accurately so your appointments are more productive. Learn more about the protocol →

Menopause Companion

Using the Menopause Companion

What stages of menopause does this tracker cover?

The Menopause Companion is useful across all stages — perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Read about the stages here →

Why can't I see older check-ins in the chart?

The Trends chart shows the last 30 days. If you've recently started tracking, or cleared your storage, the chart may appear empty. Export backups regularly to preserve your history.

How do I use the report for a GP appointment?

The Report tab generates a summary of your symptoms and patterns that you can bring to a consultation. Read our guide on using tracking data in appointments →

Can I track HRT side effects?

Yes — use the event log and evening check-in to note symptoms alongside your HRT start date. This gives you a before/after picture that's useful for your next review. Read our HRT primer →

Is this a medical tool?

No. It is a personal symptom tracking tool. It does not provide diagnosis, medical advice, or treatment recommendations. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for clinical decisions.
